Our History

In October 1987, the Armidale Express headline “Professional Trainer Takes on CYSS” marked the beginning of a transformative journey for what is now Jobs Australia Enterprises. The story began with the Armidale Community Youth Support Scheme (CYSS), a federally funded initiative aimed at assisting young adults in tackling unemployment. However, after 14 years, the Federal Government deemed it necessary to transition to a more inclusive and comprehensive scheme. This led to the inception of SkillShare, which officially started on 1 January 1989, broadening its services to all unemployed individuals.

The local management committee of CYSS, recognising the need for a shift in focus from welfare to job-specific skills training, took bold steps. They relocated from their modest cottage on Taylor Street to a larger premise on Beardy Street, formerly occupied by New State Motors. This move was coupled with the hiring of a skilled industrial trainer from Sydney. These changes laid the foundation for what would become a premier private industry training centre in Armidale.

The early days were marked by a flurry of activities aimed at establishing the new SkillShare programme. Training courses in job search skills, occupational health and safety, and computer basics with an

Apple computer were initiated. Initially targeting young adults aged 15 to 25, the programme expanded in January 1989 to include a wider demographic, thanks to the new SkillShare funding.

As the organisation grew, it established itself as a significant training provider under the name “The Work Shop”. The team, which initially included a full-time trainer and a part-time psychology student, expanded to include a centre manager and various industry-specific trainers. This team laid the groundwork for Armidale SkillShare, fostering strong community involvement and securing on-the-job training placements with local businesses and the University of New England colleges.

The 1990s saw further evolution, with the introduction of the New Careers for Aboriginal People Program (NCAP) and the Get Started for Youth Program. These initiatives, alongside numerous Federal Government Labour Market Programs, allowed the organisation to carry out community infrastructure projects and extend its reach to Uralla, Walcha, and Guyra.

By 1998, the organisation had undergone significant rebranding, emerging as Jobs Australia Armidale. This new identity came with expanded services, including personnel recruitment, intensive employment services, and accredited training. The organisation’s footprint grew to encompass Inverell, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, and Dorrigo, supported by a dedicated team and robust community partnerships.

Today, Jobs Australia Enterprises remains a community-based, not-for-profit organisation committed to promoting employment through excellence in work placement and training. Our history is a testament to the power of community, innovation, and adaptability.
